The first thing you will need to do is measure your dog. Measure them from the tip of the nose to the tail. Take that measurement and add about 6 inches to it. That total is how long your bed new pet bed should measure. Then measure your dog from shoulder to shoulder at the widest point. Take that measurement and add about 6 inches to it as well. That total is how wide your pet bed should be. For example, if your dog measures 20” long and 10” wide, you want your bed to measure at least 26” x 16”. This method will give your dog plenty of room the sprawl out when needed. When undecided between two sizes, buy one that is a bit too large rather than a bit too small. Below is a general guide if you are unable to measure your pet.
Cuddle vs.Sprawl Sleepers
Sprawl Sleepers - Pillow style beds, mats, pet throws, etc are constructed for dogs that like to sprawl and lay out across the entire surface of the pet bed. Sprawl style beds typically cater to MD, LG and XLG size dogs.
Cuddle Sleepers - Most small to medium size beds are designed for pets that like to curl up, snuggle or cuddle and feature bolstered walls to offer support and comfort. Some larger dogs like also like to cuddle sleep, hence large size bolster beds. Cuddlers sleep in a C shape, nose to tail.
Follow the instructions provided on the care label of the product you purchased. If you have already removed the label, most of our beds can be machine washed. Many of our beds will have the following care instructions.
Place your pet bed out of path of foot traffic to avoid disruptions to your furry friend’s snooze fest.
No, our pet beds are not chew resistant unless stated and are not recommended for pets with chewing behaviors.
Chopped Memory Foam - This is the next step up from fiber fill as an economical blend of ground up foam and memory foam are mixed to create a chopped foam mix. The reason a mix is required is that memory foam is far too sticky and therefore would clump together if not mixed with traditional foam. A very firm mattress type of effect can be achieved by using chopped foam, especially when used in conjunction with a chambered or baffled style liner. Typically, not recommended for machine washing as foam absorbs water causing the foam to clump and lengthy dry times.
Orthopedic Foam - This type of foam is also referred to as “egg crate” foam due to the peak and valley type of construction. Orthopedic foam helps to improve blood circulation and is therefore great for older dogs or dogs that have a predisposition to hip and joint problems. Most orthopedic foam should not be machine washed as the foam can twist and get out of shape during the wash cycle and thus ruin the pet bed.
Gel Memory Foam - This is the highest quality of foam traditionally used in pet beds as it contours to a pet’s body and can also be treated with chemicals to give it a “cooling” property. This type of foam is also not recommended for machine washing as it can twist and gnarl very easily during the wash cycle.
